Barbara Be Meets Andy Cooper from Hip Hop group Ugly Duckling in LA.

Ugly Duckling are one of those under appreciated, under-rated and totally under the radar hip-hop groups. But even if not a hip-hop head you’ll no doubt have heard a couple of their tracks. Their music has featured in films (think Drillbit Taylor and Eurotrip), computer games (think Tony Hawk’s Project 8) and on TV all over the world. In the UK their music featured prominently in the comedy series Ideal as well as “Smack” being featured on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night takeaway. And most recently during the World Cup in Brazil their 2001 track “Just A Little Samba” featured on a VISA advert and on the BBC’s match coverage.

Ugly Ducking retain a cult following both in and out of the United States and recently toured the UK with contemporaries Jurassic 5. Ugly Duckling bring fun to the genre with upbeat sampling and scratching coupled with humourous, intelligent, satirical lyrics. They are a throwback to late 80’s and early 90’s groups they were inspired by like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Eric B & Rakim, Run-DMC and Jungle Brothers.

Formed out of Long Beach, California and consisting of DJ Young Einstein and MC’s Dizzy Dustin and Andy Cooper, Ugly Duckling, were a welcome antithesis of Gangsta Rap when they were most prominent in the late nineties and early noughties.

Barbara Be and OnTrax met the utterly fantastic, and totally massive, Andy Cooper in Downtown LA to have a chat… next to the freeway.
